It is a delight to welcome staff past and present to events that celebrate the very special members of our community. As it was again last Wednesday evening when we gathered in the library to celebrate the retirement of the true legend that is Dougie Mustoe. Dougie came to Burford as a student having been in the primary school before. After a brief period in the real world, Dougie joined the staff in 1970 and has been here ever since. There is a more detailed piece in the Old Burfordian section below written by another legend Stuart Norridge (contemporary of Dougie as a student and also member of staff).
Such longevity in a career is rare, and such unwavering dedication to one institution is close to unique. However, the community feeling at Burford is truly special, and we are fortunate to have a number of staff who have committed significant time to the school, guiding multiple generations of students on their journey to adulthood. These long-standing connections with our community form a vital foundation for our core values Respect - Participate - Reach.
The continuity provided by these lasting relationships is more than a testament to loyalty; it is the bedrock upon which progress is built. By honouring our past and learning from those who have shaped our culture, we gain the insight and stability needed to evolve. This deep-rooted history empowers us not only to move forward with confidence but also to question, reflect, and challenge when needed. We are not afraid to rethink tradition where improvement is possible, and it is through this balance – of respect for where we have come from and courage to push boundaries – that true growth occurs.
So, we bid farewell to Dougie, in himself a piece of Burford history, in full knowledge that Mr Ashley will be able to find him in the bowls club most days should he need the main hall swept out in an emergency.
