On Friday, 17 November 2023, we held our Charter Day Senior Prizegiving, which recognised and celebrated the achievements of our students in years 10 to 13 at Burford School.
This year we were delighted to welcome Prof Sir Martin Landray, FMedSci, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford and former parent-governor at Burford School as our guest speaker.
In 2021, Martin was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to Public Health and Science. An expert in clinical trials, when COVID-19 first emerged he was among the first to recognise the need to find treatments to improve the chances of survival for those admitted to hospital with the new disease.
He established RECOVERY, the world’s largest trial of treatments for COVID-19. Results from the trial included the discovery that dexamethasone, the cheap and widely available steroid drug, reduced the risk of death for patients with COVID-19. Rapidly adopted by hospitals worldwide, this one discovery has been estimated to have saved over 1 million.
