MY BURFORD – MRS CHARLOTTE NORTHCOTT – MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES TEACHER

Charlotte Northcott The Burfordian

Our Modern Foreign Languages Teacher Mrs Charlotte Northcott reflects on her role and time at Burford School as part of our new 'My Burford' series.

It would not be possible to offer then ‘best of education’ to all our students without a superb staff team and in every issue we shine a spotlight on a member of the team!

Let’s take a look at Mrs Charlotte Northcott’s time at Burford and how her role has grown and developed.

A member of Team Burford since 2021, joining the MFL Department as a teacher, in the past year I have become a House Steward for Wysdom House and taken on the responsibility for my two languages (French and German) within the Department. However, as much as I love teaching now, this hasn’t always been my profession – I have previously worked in Event Management and Wedding Planning, so a very different background to where I am now!

My day-to-day role involves teaching our students French and German, but in addition to this, I work closely with the Head of Department to organise assessments, trips, and opportunities for our students to widen their horizons within the languages they study.

I love being able to share my passion for languages with our budding linguists and strive to make my lessons fun, engaging and challenging for all. Burford School gives me the scope to do this, encouraging all its staff to try new things, take risks and always make improvements, to be the best practitioners we can be. In a supportive and encouraging environment such as this, it is not only the students who are pushing themselves to be even better!

While in my House Steward role, I arrange and coordinate House events for both students and staff to participate in and win points. I love hearing the great ideas from staff and students alike for competitions and I’m looking forward to the exciting future events that are planned. Currently, Wysdom is in second place this year, something I am super proud of!

A highlight from my time here at Burford has got to be taking the German students to visit the Rhinelands in Germany – this was a fantastic opportunity for the students to practice their German in a real-life setting, as well as make lasting memories with their friends.

I am also in awe of the musicals run by our fantastic Drama and Music departments. The professionalism and dedication shown by our students are an inspiration to see and it makes me incredibly proud to teach these talented individuals.

Outside of school, I can often be found surrounded by friends or family, enjoying the theatre or visiting a new place. I love reading, particularly crime and mystery, and I am a huge Harry Potter and Disney fan!

Burford School described in three words is easy for me: supportive, varied and inspiring.
