MY BURFORD - MRS SMITH - MEDICAL OFFICER AND ADMINISTRATOR

Headshot

Our Medical Officer and Administrator Mrs E Smith reflects on her role and time at Burford School as part of our new 'My Burford' series.

This feature series aims to shine a spotlight on the superb staff team at Burford who make it possible for us to offer 'the best of education' to our students.

After over seven years as a Teaching Assistant at Wychwood Primary School, a job I truly cherished, it was time for a change. Moving on from the village where my three children grew up was bittersweet, but when the opportunity to join Burford School as First Aid Officer – affectionately referred to as Matron – came up, I knew it was the perfect next step.

With my naturally caring nature and a strong connection to many of the students I’d seen pass through Wychwood, I jumped at the chance. I began my new role in September 2019, and my first year was nothing short of extraordinary. Covid-19 struck soon after I started, throwing me into the deep end. Gone were the days of just dealing with the usual bumps, bruises, and headaches. Suddenly, I was wearing full PPE, armed with a temperature gun, assessing poorly students at classroom doors. My step count soared, and so did the challenges – but I persevered.

Every day at Burford is a whirlwind. My to-do list often gets postponed until after 3pm as I navigate the bustling school environment. Yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s a joy to watch the students thrive in such a supportive and vibrant community. Of course, there are always a few who try their luck, but with a combination of humour and straight-talking, I usually manage to send them back to lessons with a smile.

The wall of thank you cards and heartfelt notes in my office serves as a constant reminder that I’m making a difference. It’s a small but meaningful testament to the impact I’ve been lucky enough to have in my role.

Some of the most memorable moments at Burford include attending the Year 11 proms. Seeing the students dressed to the nines, arriving in unique forms of transportation, and celebrating the end of their exams is always a highlight. It’s wonderful to witness them on the brink of exciting new chapters in their lives. Another personal favourite is watching the school productions. The dedication and talent of both students and staff are phenomenal, with Kinky Boots being a standout for me.

Burford School has become so much more than a workplace – it’s a community I’m proud to be part of. The challenges, the laughter, and the small moments of connection make every day here a rewarding adventure.
