Our Head of Computer Science and ICT Mr C Elliott reflects on his role and time at Burford School as part of our new 'My Burford' series.
This feature series aims to shine a spotlight on the superb staff team at Burford who make it possible for us to offer 'the best of education' to our students.
I joined Burford School in
2016 as the Head of Computer Science and ICT, having previously worked at Deer Park School in Cirencester for 15 years. At my previous school, I served as an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) in the mathematics department before transitioning to Head of Computer Science and Subject Leader with GiTEP (Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Training Partnership). The move to Burford represented a new challenge and the opportunity to teach Computer Science at A Level.
From my very first visit, it was clear that Burford is an exceptional school, where staff and students collaborate in an environment that is both purposeful and welcoming. The students are motivated and take full advantage of the many opportunities offered to them. While the school has a traditional feel with a rich history, it is also forward thinking and adaptable to the changing times.
As Head of Department, my primary responsibility is to deliver a curriculum that equips young people to thrive in the ever-evolving world of technology. This includes educating students about staying safe online by raising awareness of the risks and dangers that technology can pose, as well as highlighting the benefits and opportunities offered by advancements such as AI.
Although it’s difficult to pinpoint a single highlight of my time at Burford, the most rewarding part has been seeing students progress beyond A Level Computer Science and move on to successful careers, university placements, or apprenticeships. It’s incredibly fulfilling when former students return or email to share how they are now self sufficient, earning a great salary, and using the skills they developed during their time at school. During the academic year, we also organise enrichment trips to places like Bletchley Park and Warner Studios, connecting classroom learning to real world experiences. It's always a joy to witness students' sense of wonder as they discover the history of computing in the UK or get a behind-the-scenes look at their favourite films.
Outside of school, I enjoy reading, cycling, and always have a few DIY projects on the go. I also play table tennis with friends from my local community. My wife’s family are farmers from Wales, so I’ve been known to lend a hand with tractor work, fencing, or chasing sheep!
My to-do list primarily consists of staying updated with the latest technological advancements and finding innovative ways to keep lessons engaging and relevant. This often involves exploring new AI tools and understanding their benefits and risks. I’m constantly learning and developing my own skills to ensure I can best support the exceptional students who choose to study Computer Science at GCSE or A Level.
As I sit here on a cold morning, I’m grateful to work alongside such supportive colleagues in a school that is both welcoming and well-resourced. It’s truly a privilege to be part of a community that places such high value on helping young people excel.
